Suggestions Please

I'll admit, I'm not much of a reader. I REALLY want to be though! I always just find myself getting so distracted by other things...or maybe I just get bored by the books I am reading so I resort to doing ANYTHING else. Either way, I've decided that I need to pick it up a notch and start reading more. Which is where I need some help. What do I read? I think the last book I finished was Harry Potter 4...and that was a long time ago. I got bored of the 5th one and stopped reading. And Twilight? Don't get me started. I couldn't stand to finish it. I am currently reading How to Win Friends and Influence People, and that seems to be going well...I actually really enjoy the book.
So for the sake of me becoming more cultured and literate, let's hear your suggestions on some of your favorite books!

  1. I just finished "Emma" by Jane Austen. It was really good, but it's long and you have to keep your attention on it for sure!
I like the classics. My next one will be either Mansfield Park, or Jane Eyre. Weird that I've never read them. So little time!!!

I read "Bonds that make us free" by C. Terry Warner and it was amazing. since you are reading "how to win. . . blahblah" right now, I think you'd like it.

I never got into twilight. I heard the writing was terrible. I know I'll get shot for saying that, but oh well. I'll be checking back to see what other people suggest!

  2. This is whats on my reading list:

    Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
    The Count of Monte Cristo

Sadly I havent read any of these so I have no idea if they are good or not. Other people said they were?

And a great thinking book is Gary Chapmans - The Five Love Languages.

If you like war books - the Hiding Place - Story of Corrie Tenboom is really good.

And thats all I can think of at the moment.

  3. I'm a loser and I love history books... One of my favorite books (which I gave up in August, but not because it's not interesting!) is called

    "Citizen of the World"

by John English and it's part 1 of a biography on Trudeau. But if you don't like T.do or history, I will not be able to help you. Sorry!

  4. OOOokay.
I just finnished reading the "Gregor the Underlander" series by Susan Collins which were really amusing short reads in juv. fiction. Also, her "Hunger Games" series is REALLY good, although I do get annoyed at her characters sometimes; maybe that's just me.
I love anything by Alexander McCall Smith; especially "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" and "44 Scotland Street" series.
Non-fiction I would have to say the best reads I've had lately are "Three Cups of Tea" (Greg Mortenson) and "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl. Both make me wonder what I've been doing with my sorry life, but maybe I'll get some movitation and be a better person...tomorrow. :)
There you go, that should keep you busy for a while.

  7. I love the book Avery mentioned:
Night - it's a man's personal story of being in the concentration camps. Short read too.
I also love Fire of the Covenant - about the Martin/Willie Handcart companies. LONG, but great.
I also am a fan of The Peace Giver.
I have too many favorites. Those were the first 3 I could think of.

Pope Joan -- another historical fiction. a woman becomes the Pope (there is one sequence of events you'll probably want to skip)

Pres. Hinckely's Standing For Something -- gets you thinking & helps you want to be better & teach your kids good things
